About St Comgall's Church

St Comgall’s Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in Antrim, County Antrim, within the Diocese of Down and Connor. Dedicated to St Comgall, it remains a place of worship for the parish. The church, together with its gates and gate piers, is protected as a Grade B+ listed building. Its dark basalt once gave rise to the local name ‘Black Chapel’, although the stone has lightened through weathering and restoration.

Completed in 1879, the present church replaced an earlier building dating from 1818–20. It has a Latin-cross plan and was constructed using basalt from Hart’s Quarry and sandstone from County Down. The old chapel remained inside the rising walls until it was carefully dismantled. A front tower houses a bell which is now sounded without swinging because of its ageing supports. Inside, the marble altar depicts the Last Supper and contains relics of St Comgall. Renovation during the 1970s removed a damaging linseed-oil coating and added permanent confessionals beside the sanctuary.
