About Church of St Mellanus

The Church of St Mellanus is a Church of England parish church in St Mellion, Cornwall. Its Grade I designation recognises its exceptional historic and architectural importance.

The earliest surviving fabric may be thirteenth-century, while much of the building belongs to the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Rubble masonry incorporates granite and serpentine, with finely dressed granite used for the two-stage western tower. Inside are seven-bay arcades and exposed wagon roofs above the nave, chancel and aisles. A complete group of oak seating from around 1530 has carved ends featuring religious emblems and figures in Gothic and Renaissance styles. Other notable features include historic glass found beneath the chancel in 1840, an octagonal font carved with a serpent, and an uncommon lime-ash floor. Part of the southern aisle wall was reconstructed in 1691, and restorations followed in 1840 and 1870.
