About St Uny's Church, Lelant
St Uny’s Church, Lelant is a Church of England parish church in St Ives, Cornwall. Dedicated to St Uny, also known as Euny, it remains the parish church of Lelant and is protected at Grade I.
Dating from 1101, the medieval church is constructed wholly from granite. Its nave arcades retain Norman elements, while its windows display Perpendicular Gothic design. Recorded by 1170, it later passed through the ownership of Tywardreath Priory and the bishops of Exeter before becoming connected with Crediton’s collegiate church. Repairs were required in the early 18th century after drifting sand damaged the building, and J. D. Sedding oversaw a restoration in 1873. Lightning struck the tower in 1878, revealing a severely decayed bell-chamber floor; the tower was secured and its bells rehung by January 1880. The six bells were cast by John Taylor of Loughborough, with the earliest pair dating to 1836. Notable burials include Cornish language scholar Henry Jenner and artist Peter Lanyon.
