About St Materiana's Church
St Materiana’s Church is a Church of England parish church at Minster, within Forrabury and Minster in Cornwall. Set in Minster Wood near the River Valency, about half a mile east of Boscastle, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. The site is also designated for its greater horseshoe bats, including Cornwall’s largest recorded maternity roost for the species.
The church dates from the Norman period and was built around 1150, before Boscastle developed around its medieval castle. Later additions were made during the late Middle Ages, followed by restoration in the nineteenth century. The place was called Talkarn in Celtic times and gained the name Minster during the Anglo-Saxon period, reflecting the presence of a monastery. St Materiana’s tomb remained here until the Reformation. Flooding in August 2004 damaged much of the interior, including the pews and electric organ, and archaeological investigations followed in 2005.
