About Church of St Cubert
The Church of St Cubert is an active Church of England parish church in Crantock, Cornwall. Dating chiefly from the thirteenth century, it is protected at Grade I, recognising its exceptional historic and architectural importance. The site has long been linked with St Cubert, a Welsh missionary of the seventh century who is traditionally believed to have preached locally.
Built in slatestone rubble with granite detailing, the church replaced both a Norman structure and an earlier wooden place of worship. Its western tower was added about 1300, while a south aisle, transept and porch enlarged the building during the fifteenth century. G. E. Street directed restoration work from 1846 to 1849, followed by reconstruction of the tower in 1852. Notable features include medieval wagon roofs, a thirteenth-century font with dogtooth carving, reused medieval panels in the pulpit, and an inscribed early carved stone set into the tower wall. A late nineteenth-century organ by Henry Willis was installed here in 1970.
