About Colan Church

Colan Church is a Church of England parish church in Colan, mid-Cornwall, standing beside the Ryalton Stream between Newquay and St Columb Major. Dedicated to the seventh-century Welsh saint Colanus, or Collen, it has been protected at Grade I since 1967. Clergy from St Columb Minor have cared for the parish since the mid-20th century.

The present building is attributed to Walter Bronscombe, Bishop of Exeter, around 1250, and was formally dedicated by Bishop John Grandisson in 1336. Originally cruciform, it was enlarged in the 15th century using slatestone and granite rubble with dressed granite details. Its two-stage western tower has granite ashlar above darker banded stonework. After serious deterioration, the tower was reconstructed in 1879 and a wider restoration was completed by 1887. Features include a wagon roof with carved bosses, granite porch benches, a panelled chest, memorial brasses and stained glass commemorating former clergy and parishioners.
