About St Mary's Church, Callington

St Mary’s Church, Callington is the Church of England parish church serving Callington in Cornwall. Dedicated in 1438 for both worship and burials, it replaced a chapel known to have existed there by 1384. The church has held Grade I listed status since 1968.

Granite blocks and rough stone form the walls, with slate covering the roofs. During the fifteenth century, the building gained its tower, porches, aisles and upper nave windows, while the nave itself was raised. J. P. St Aubyn directed repairs in 1858, followed by J. D. Sedding’s extension of the northern aisle in 1882. Fire ruined the tower and its bells in 1895. Inside are a restored medieval timber roof, Norman-era granite font, early arcades and an alabaster memorial depicting Sir Robert Willoughby, who died in 1502.
