About Abbey Church of St Mary and St Petroc
The Abbey Church of St Mary and St Petroc is a Roman Catholic parish church in Bodmin, Cornwall. It occupies a site with medieval monastic roots and now serves a parish extending across a broad part of northern Cornwall, including Catholic churches at Wadebridge, Padstow and Tintagel. The Diocese of Plymouth assumed responsibility for the former abbey complex in 1976 after its community of canons closed.
The site’s monastic history developed in the early 12th century, when the Canons Regular of the Lateran founded St Mary’s Priory. It became Cornwall’s largest religious house before its suppression in 1538. Catholic worship returned to Bodmin with the construction of a church and rectory in 1845, while the canons re-established their community in 1881. Work on the present church started in 1937, paused during the Second World War, and was completed in 1965. The community had received abbey status in 1953.
