About Church of St Nefydd and St Mary

The Church of St Nefydd and St Mary serves Llannefydd in Conwy, close to the Denbighshire boundary. It remains in use for parish worship, with services held regularly, and forms part of the St Asaph diocese. Its heritage and architectural significance are recognised through listing at Grade I.

Tradition links its beginnings to the fifth-century Welsh saint Nefydd, though written records extend back only to 1291. Today’s building is thought to have taken shape around 1500, replacing an older church. Restoration work followed during the nineteenth century and in 1908–09 under Henry Harold Hughes. Local limestone forms most of the walls, while Welsh slate covers the roofs. The plan has twin naves, with a porch on the southern side and a bellcote above the west end. Interior details include Hughes’s Arts and Crafts pulpit and Hanoverian royal arms painted on slate.
