About St John the Baptist's Church
St John the Baptist's Church stands on Station Road in Old Colwyn, part of Colwyn Bay in Conwy. It belongs to the Aled Mission Area within the Diocese of St Asaph and remains a place of worship. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building, while its churchyard gateway has a separate Grade II designation.
Created as a daughter church to St Catherine’s in Colwyn, it served English-speaking worshippers at a time when services there were held in Welsh. Mrs Eleanor Frost laid the foundation stone in 1899 and funded numerous fittings, among them the altar, reredos, pulpit, screen and communion rails. John Douglas’s Chester practice designed the building, and the western tower followed in 1912 under the successor firm. Local Penmaen limestone, sandstone detailing and an ashlar sandstone interior define its fabric. Notable features include a double-hammerbeam-style roof and stained glass by Charles Kempe.
