About St. Mungo's Parish Church

St. Mungo's Parish Church is an active Church of Scotland place of worship on Bedford Place in Alloa, serving the town’s parish within the Presbytery of Stirling. It is dedicated to St Mungo, or Kentigern, who is associated with the founding of Glasgow and is its patron saint. The church is protected as a Category B listed building.

An earlier chapel dedicated to the saint probably dated from the fourteenth or fifteenth century. Its seventeenth-century replacement eventually became unsafe and inadequate, leading to construction of the present church between 1817 and 1819 on land given by the Erskine family. James Gillespie Graham designed the large Gothic hall church in worked ashlar. Its rectangular form has a square tower at each corner, while a 207-foot crocketed spire, inspired by a medieval example at Louth, rises above the south front with turrets and flying buttresses. A four-faced clock and bell were installed in 1825. The church opened in June 1819 with seating for 1,561 people.
