About St Wilfrid's Church, Grappenhall
St Wilfrid’s Church, Grappenhall is an active Church of England parish church in Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire. It belongs to the Diocese of Chester and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The church originated in the early 12th century and was probably finished around 1120. Its first structure was modest, with a nave and chancel, while the present building is largely the result of reconstruction begun in 1529 using local red sandstone. A south aisle followed in 1539, incorporating a 14th-century chantry chapel, and the porch was built in 1641. Paley and Austin carried out an extensive restoration in 1873–74. Notable features include the 23-metre west tower, a Norman or earlier font, medieval stained glass showing seven saints, and the restored effigy of Sir William Boydell. The tower contains ten working bells installed in 2019, alongside two older bells dating from about 1700.
