About Old St Ann's Church, Warrington
Old St Ann’s Church, Warrington, is a former Anglican place of worship in Warrington, Cheshire. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Worship ended there in November 1995, and the building has accommodated an indoor climbing centre since 1996. Another church bearing the same dedication opened on a site about half a mile away in 2000.
Designed by John Douglas, the church was constructed from 1866 to 1868 and consecrated in February 1869 after delays involving poor weather and payment to the builder. It is built mainly of red brick, with blue-brick detailing and a slate-covered roof. Its layout includes a six-bay aisleless nave, an apsidal chancel, two porches, a vestry and a three-stage tower. The tower has lancet windows, paired louvred bell openings, a corbel-supported parapet and a steep saddleback roof. A stair turret at one corner rises above the parapet beneath a tall conical roof. Paintings of the Evangelists dating from 1868 survive in the sanctuary, although they are currently concealed.
