About St Oswald's Church, Backford

St Oswald’s Church, Backford stands in the village of Backford, north-west of Chester, beside Backford Hall and near the A41. It remains an active Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Chester. The church is protected at Grade II* and shares its benefice with Holy Trinity, Capenhurst.

A church occupied the site by the 13th century. The present sandstone building, roofed in slate, retains a 14th-century chancel and a 15th-century Perpendicular tower with battlements, finials and gargoyles. After the nave was reconstructed in 1728–31, Ewan Christian remodelled it in Gothic Revival style between 1877 and 1879. Notable fittings include a rare Cheshire aumbry, a chained Bible dated 1617, an early 17th-century oak chest made from Chester Cathedral timber, and six painted wooden memorial boards by the Randle Holme family. The church also has a two-manual Franklin Lloyd organ and six bells, the earliest three cast in 1714.
