About St Bartholomew's Church, Barrow
St Bartholomew’s Church is located in Great Barrow, in the parish of Barrow near Chester, Cheshire. This Church of England place of worship continues to serve as a parish church within the Chester diocese. Its architectural and historic importance is recognised through Grade II* protection.
Religious use of the site can be traced to Henry II’s rule, when Robert de Bachepuz granted it to the Knights Hospitallers, who maintained a preceptory there. Parish status followed during Elizabeth I’s reign. The chancel was erected in 1671, and the west tower carries a 1744 date. John Douglas repaired the building in 1871 before completing extensive work in 1883. Red sandstone blocks and clay tiles form the main fabric, while the north aisle preserves older masonry. Interior features include a hammer-beam chancel ceiling, Kempe windows, an eight-sided font containing a lead basin from 1713, and an organ made by Binns. A solitary bell dates to 1767.
