About St John the Baptist's Church
St John the Baptist’s Church serves Aldford in Cheshire as an Anglican parish church. It belongs to the Chester diocese and remains in regular use, with its benefice joined to St Peter’s at Waverton and St Mary’s at Bruera. The building has Grade II protection.
John Douglas designed the present church, completed in 1866 for Richard Grosvenor, the second Marquess of Westminster, where an older place of worship had stood. Its red sandstone exterior, grey-green slate roofing and timber-shingled spire draw on Gothic forms from the later 1200s. In 1902, Douglas and Minshull created another vestry, allowing the original room to become a chapel. Inside are a marble pulpit and font, five mosaic sections by Salviati and chapel glazing produced by Morris & Co. following Burne-Jones’s artwork. Historic memorials include tributes retained from the former building. A William Hill organ, subsequently altered, and six bells are also housed here.
