About St Michael

St Michael is an active church in Penbryn, Ceredigion, set on the west-facing slope of the Hoffnant Valley around half a kilometre from Penbryn beach. It belongs to the Church of England tradition and was designated Grade I listed in September 1964. As recorded in October 2023, worship took place each Sunday morning.

Although its completion date is uncertain, the church is thought to have 12th-century origins, with an earlier medieval place of worship possibly occupying the site. Its roof may survive from the 15th century, while the porch probably dates from the early 1600s and the windows from the early 19th century. Major restoration was carried out by D. Davies of Penrhiwllan in 1887, followed by further work in 1957. Inside, whitewashed walls and slate flooring accompany a limestone square believed to be original, along with medieval square fonts in the main interior and porch.
