About Holy Cross Church

Holy Cross Church stands at Mwnt in Ceredigion, Wales, and serves as a Church of England parish church. The building has Grade I protection and is thought to date from the thirteenth century. Once connected with Llangoedmor as an outlying chapel, it has belonged to the parish of Y Ferwig since 1934.

The church began as a medieval place of worship for sailors, on a site traditionally associated with the early Welsh Christian era. Its compact interior forms one undivided space, lit through windows set into thick walls, beneath a distinctive roof. The exterior combines whitewashed rough-stone masonry with slate roofing. A medieval baptismal font, fashioned from Preseli stone and dated to either the twelfth or thirteenth century, is among the oldest fittings, while the six-sided pulpit is Victorian. Repairs were carried out in 1853, with another restoration following storm damage in 1917.
