About All Saints

All Saints is an active parish church in Cellan, Ceredigion, around three miles north-east of Lampeter. It forms part of the United Benefice of Lampeter and is designated Grade II*, reflecting its particular architectural and historic interest.

The church probably originated in the 1200s or 1300s, perhaps on the site of a Bronze Age burial mound, and may first have been dedicated to St Callwen. Built from rubble masonry beneath a slate covering, it comprises a nave and chancel with a south porch, north vestry and western bellcote. The slate replaced an earlier thatched roof during the 1600s. Surviving medieval fabric includes a font with a square basin, while a rood loft recorded in 1810 was later removed. Restoration took place in 1861–62 and again under Herbert Luck North in 1908. The later work introduced white-painted boarded ceilings enriched with floral and vine designs, including a symbolic lamb above the chancel.
