About Seion Welsh Baptist Church
Seion Welsh Baptist Church stands at Island Place in Llanelli, near Water Street and Upper Park Street. The Baptist chapel is a Grade II listed building, a designation granted in 1992 in recognition of its classical design and place among Llanelli’s historic Baptist chapels. The protected structure includes the street-facing railings.
The congregation was established in 1831, with David Bowen serving as pastor until his death in 1853. Henry Rogers designed the present chapel, completed in 1857 as Llanelli’s population expanded alongside the local tinplate and steel industries. Its three-part frontage has tall arched windows, a wooden pediment above the porch and large pilasters of local grey-brown stone, contrasted with brown sandstone detailing. Within is a spacious interior surrounded by galleries, including an organ gallery installed in 1929, and box pews extending beneath them. Two adjoining schoolrooms were designed by William Griffiths and added in 1913.
