About Lloyd Street Chapel, Llanelli
Lloyd Street Chapel, Llanelli was a Welsh-speaking Independent Congregationalist church in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. It is recorded as a National Monument of Wales, although worship ended there in June 1991. Following serious damage to the empty structure, it was pulled down in 1997. Probation Service offices were later built on the land.
The congregation began in 1886, when supporters of the former minister J. Pandy Williams withdrew from nearby Tabernacle amid continuing disagreements. After first gathering at Lakefield School on 21 March, the new church was legally formed on 9 April. Its Lloyd Street building was ready less than a year and a half later. Sir Arthur Stepney set the foundation memorial on 12 July 1887, and inaugural gatherings followed between 28 and 30 August. During the years after closure, intruders wrecked the Nicholson organ and used its pipes to damage the richly decorated ceiling.
