About Capel Als
Capel Als is an Independent Congregational chapel at Llanelli in Carmarthenshire, Wales. Protected as a Grade II listed building, it is considered among the country’s more important places of worship. Its name is traditionally linked to a woman called Als or Alys, whose cottage may once have occupied the site.
The first chapel was erected in 1780 as a modest structure and enlarged in 1797, during Llanelli’s early industrial growth. A much larger building replaced it in the 1830s as the congregation expanded. Architect Thomas Thomas oversaw a further rebuilding and enlargement in 1852, later adapting the design for other Independent chapels. Overcrowding prompted another major scheme, completed by Owen Morris Roberts in 1894. Rather than demolish the existing chapel, the work retained many elements of the earlier design while substantially increasing its size. A schoolroom was also added during the later nineteenth century.
