About Capel Eidalwyr
Capel Eidalwyr is a Roman Catholic chapel in Dre-fach Felindre, Carmarthenshire. It was created by Italian prisoners held at a wartime camp and is no longer used for worship. The chapel is protected as a Grade II* listed building and has undergone work to safeguard its distinctive interior.
The project was conceived by the interned priest Don Ital Padoan, with the camp authorities allowing a former sleeping hut to be adapted. Consecrated in 1944, it was decorated chiefly by Mario Ferlito using improvised supplies. Packing-crate timber, food tins, felt, cement sacks and naturally produced pigments were among the materials employed. Its richly treated interior includes a Last Supper fresco in the apse, Baroque-style painted medallions and concrete mouldings finished to imitate marble. By 2020, a larger protective structure completely surrounded the chapel to keep out the weather, while restoration continued.
