About Water Street Chapel
Water Street Chapel is a former Calvinistic Methodist place of worship in Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire. Standing on Water Street, the present chapel dates to 1831 and has held Grade II listed status since 19 May 1981. It closed in 2016 following declining membership and increasing costs.
Methodist meetings in Carmarthen began around 1740, initially in a Goose Street house. Peter Williams later established a chapel in the garden of his leased Water Street home. The 1831 building has a long frontage with two pedimented entrances supported by Tuscan columns, with tall round-headed windows above. Inside, box pews follow the shape of a five-sided gallery. A rare wineglass-shaped pulpit is reached by curved steps, while other features include stained glass, memorials and a boarded, ribbed ceiling with a prominent plaster rose. Refurbishments took place in 1891 and 1922, the latter adding a stucco façade, replacement ceiling and central organ bay.
