About English Congregational Church
The English Congregational Church stands at 105 Lammas Street in Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire. Serving the Congregational tradition, it holds Grade II listed status, granted on 19 May 1981 in recognition of its distinctive Gothic chapel design.
Completed in 1861, the church was designed by the chapel-building partnership Poulton and Woodman. Its angled position makes it prominent in the street, while rock-faced masonry and Bath stone detailing reinforce its elaborate Gothic character. The exterior includes a sharply pitched gable with a lofty window, alongside a tower containing a spiral staircase and a slim spire rising above an open bell stage. Inside, the treatment is comparatively restrained. Arched braces support the roof, and the organ occupies a pointed, apsidal recess. Other notable elements include a many-sided pulpit and a single gallery with diagonally laid timber boarding across its front.
