About Christ Church
Christ Church is a Church of England parish church at 87 Lammas Street, Carmarthen, in Carmarthenshire. It continues in its parish role and was granted Grade II protection on 19 May 1981. Its prominent Victorian form is also a recognisable feature in views across the town.
Construction began in 1867 to plans by R. K. Penson. Its formal opening occurred two years later, in September, when Connop Thirlwall, Bishop of St David’s, led the ceremony during Carmarthen’s National Eisteddfod. The building provided services in English for the growing parish, while Eglwys Dewi Sant served Welsh-speaking congregants. An organ arrived in 1873, and renovation work followed in 1891. Architecturally, the most distinctive element is the tower over the crossing, accompanied by supporting buttresses and gables positioned partway up.
