About Hen Gapel
Hen Gapel is the ruin of a former religious building in Caerfyrddin, Carmarthenshire. Now protected as a scheduled monument, it also holds Grade II listed status. Its surviving tower functions as the local war memorial, marked by a pair of plaques near the entrance.
The church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was recorded in 1388 and began as a dependent chapel serving Llansteffan. It was Anglican in 1671, before being adapted for a Nonconformist community founded by Stephen Hughes around 1670. That congregation acquired the property in 1878 and replaced the tower’s upper section with a pyramidal roof. Built of rough stone, the remains include a square tower to the west and fragments of the nave, whose east wall preserves an ornate window opening with three-lobed details. A mock clock carved in stone is dated 1879. Worship ended in 1962, and a 1974 fire led to the removal of most of the structure.
