About Gellimanwydd Chapel
Gellimanwydd Chapel is an Independent Congregationalist place of worship in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire. Also called the Christian Temple, it holds services in Welsh and is recognised as a National Monument of Wales. Founded during the eighteenth century, it is the oldest chapel in the town.
The alternative name dates from the 1870s, when a minister who believed Welsh would eventually disappear adopted wording inscribed on the building’s façade. David Tegfan Davies, a particularly notable former minister, served the congregation for 50 years and lived from 1883 to 1968. Jim Griffiths, the Welsh politician, and his wife are buried at the chapel.
