About Church of St Peter and St Paul
The Church of St Peter and St Paul is an Anglican place of worship in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. It continues to serve its parish under the Diocese of Ely. Protected at Grade I, the church was designated on 17 July 1951 and was the earliest building in Wisbech to receive that classification.
Established during the twelfth century, with a recorded building date of 1150, the church contains work from several architectural eras. A northern Norman nave adjoins another nave, and both have their own aisles and chancels. A spacious Decorated Gothic chancel replaced the earlier Norman structure and includes a prominent window at the east end. Unstable ground led to the Perpendicular bell tower being positioned separately from the main fabric. Carved commemorations decorate its more elaborate upper levels, which are crowned by a recent slender spire. Interior highlights include Joseph Nollekens’s wall memorial and a reredos completed by Salviati in 1885 to William Bassett-Smith’s design. Ten bells hang in the tower and were refurbished and rehung in 1994.
