About Chapel Of Ease
Chapel Of Ease in Wisbech St Mary, Cambridgeshire, is a small historic place of worship associated with Guyhirn. The Grade II* listed building is now looked after by the Churches Conservation Trust and has retained much of its original character.
Funded by a bequest made in 1651, the church was intended for Puritan worship during the Commonwealth and was completed in 1660. It later served as a chapel linked to Wisbech, then as Guyhirn’s church and subsequently as a mortuary chapel. Following twentieth-century decline, it was restored and rededicated in 1975. The simple rectangular structure combines brick with Barnack stone and has a red pantile roof. Its wooden bellcote holds a bell dated 1637. Inside are tightly spaced oak pews, a raised pulpit, brick flooring, plain glazing and wall-mounted hat pegs. Two Regency ceiling ventilators provide rare later embellishment.
