About Church of St Denis
The Church of St Denis stands in East Hatley, Cambridgeshire. No longer used as a place of worship, it is protected at Grade II* and is cared for by the Friends of Friendless Churches. Together with the burial ground, which retains its consecrated status, the building occupies a 200-square-metre nature reserve. The grassland supports plants such as oxlip, hoary plantain and rough hawkbit, and a path leading from East Hatley road provides access.
The church originated during the first decades of the 1200s and was renovated under William Butterfield in 1874. Regular services ended in 1959, followed by deconsecration and transfer to the district council in 1985. Serious decline in the building’s condition led the council to approve restoration funding in 2003. Responsibility passed to its present owner on 30 November 2016.
