About All Saints Church, Conington
All Saints Church, Conington is a former Anglican parish church in Conington, Cambridgeshire. It occupies a site east of the village, bounded by the A1 and the main railway linking the east coast. No longer used for regular parish worship, it is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust and has Grade I listed protection.
A church existed on the site by 1086, but the current structure was substantially rebuilt around 1500. Limestone rubble and local fieldstone form its walls, complemented by cut limestone details. Its layout includes a clerestoried nave, side aisles, chancel, chapels, porches and a western tower of four levels. The tower is distinguished by battlements, gargoyles, quatrefoil motifs and corner turrets crowned with pinnacles. Later work included repairs to the parapets in 1638, refurbishment in 1841 and strengthening of the tower in 1862. Interior features include a fifteenth-century font, Cotton and Heathcote family memorials, a Cambridge-made organ and six bells dating from 1827 to 1834.
