About St Michael's Church, Longstanton
St Michael’s Church, Longstanton is a former Anglican church in the Cambridgeshire village of Longstanton, near Cambridge. Standing at the village’s southern end, it is a Grade II* listed building and is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. It ceased regular parish use in 1973.
The church is largely from the early 1200s and is built of fieldstone with Barnack limestone details. Reed thatch covers the nave and south porch, while the chancel has a tiled roof. Its plan includes north and south aisles, a chancel and a double bellcote above the western gable. Fifteenth-century work added the porch, substantial western buttresses and a new window. The chancel, once used as a schoolroom, was taken down in 1883 and reconstructed the next year to reflect its medieval form. Inside, four-bay arcades rest on alternating circular and eight-sided columns. The churchyard also contains a holy well restored during the 1980s.
