About Memorial Chapel, The Leys School
Memorial Chapel, The Leys School stands within the school grounds in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire. This Grade II listed church commemorates William Fiddian Moulton, the school’s first headmaster, and was created to provide a dedicated setting for services previously held in the school hall.
Designed by Robert Curwen, the chapel received its foundation stone in June 1905 and was consecrated in October 1906. Its Gothic Revival architecture was chosen to harmonise with nearby school buildings. The interior includes exposed oak throughout, a roof with decorative trestles and tracery inspired by Westminster Hall, and a chequered floor of black and white marble. Fourteen stained-glass windows by H. J. Salisbury present biblical scenes, mostly episodes from Christ’s life. Other features include an oak pulpit, 32 oak benches and a First World War memorial naming former pupils who died, arranged around a figure of St George in armour.
