About Holy Sepulchre, Cambridge
Holy Sepulchre, Cambridge, often called the Round Church, is an Anglican place of worship where Bridge Street meets Round Church Street. Christian Heritage now cares for the building, which continues in religious use. One of only four surviving medieval circular churches in England, it has been protected at Grade I since 1950.
The Fraternity of the Holy Sepulchre constructed the church around 1130, taking inspiration from Jerusalem’s Holy Sepulchre rotunda. Built of stone, it features a central round nave, a surrounding passage and eight sturdy Norman piers joined by curved arches. A pointed conical roof crowns the nave, while two bells hang in an eight-sided turret. Following an ambulatory collapse in 1841, Anthony Salvin oversaw substantial repairs, including rebuilding unsafe sections, removing a gallery and restoring Norman-style window forms. Notable details include medieval angel carvings, varied designs on the column capitals and an east window installed in 1946, portraying Christ enthroned in glory.
