About Parish Church of St Peter
The Parish Church of St Peter is an active Church of England parish church in Babraham, Cambridgeshire. Dedicated to St Peter, it stands beside the River Granta in the grounds of Babraham Hall, now within the Babraham Research Campus. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Christian worship has taken place here since at least the twelfth century. The chancel and tower base were built during the mid-thirteenth century, while much of the nave, aisles and tower was reconstructed in the fifteenth-century Perpendicular Gothic style. Built from flint rubble with limestone detailing, the church has an embattled western tower, tall arcades and a panelled tie-beam roof. Notable fittings include a fifteenth-century font, seventeenth-century altar rails, monuments to the Benet family and a wooden reredos dating from about 1700. The east window contains stained glass created to John Piper’s design in 1966, using imagery associated with St Peter.
