About Church of St Mary and St George

The Church of St Mary and St George is a Church of England parish church in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, within the Oxford diocese. The building has Grade II protection and remains home to a worshipping community serving Sands and Castlefield. Services include both a traditional celebration of the Eucharist and a contemporary gathering for families, with activities for children.

Gerald Wellesley, the seventh Duke of Wellington, and Trenwith Wills designed the church, which was erected between 1935 and 1938. Its distinctive architecture is a free interpretation of the Byzantine tradition and reflects the Anglo-Catholic character that shaped worship there for much of its past. A copper-covered dome, now green with age, forms its most prominent feature and is familiar on the High Wycombe skyline. In recent years, Charismatic and Evangelical influences have broadened its worship, and a newly planted congregation began meeting in 2019.
