About St. Mary's Church, Chesham

St. Mary’s Church, Chesham is an active Church of England parish church in Chesham, Buckinghamshire. Belonging to the Diocese of Oxford, it serves the reunited parishes of Chesham, Waterside and Ashley Green. The church is protected as a Grade I-listed building.

Built around 1150, the church stands where a Bronze Age circle of puddingstones once existed. Surviving fabric dates from the twelfth century, while alterations during the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries produced a blend of English Gothic forms. By the nineteenth century, tower additions and burials beneath and beside the building had weakened its structure. George Gilbert Scott oversaw substantial strengthening and remodelling in the 1860s, followed by further work under Robert Potter during the twentieth century. Historically, the large parish had two vicars until its rights of appointment were united in 1769.
