About Stapleton Road Chapel
Stapleton Road Chapel is an active Congregational church in Easton, Bristol, facing Stapleton Road near Easton Leisure Centre. It remained independent when the United Reformed Church was formed in 1972 and is affiliated with the Congregational Federation.
The congregation began after members separated from Castle Green Chapel in 1866 or 1867, initially worshipping at the former workhouse in Pennywell Road. A substantial schoolroom opened on the present site in 1868, followed by the chapel in 1871. Hans Fowler Price designed the building in an Italianate manner, using blue Pennant stone with contrasting freestone details. Its frontage includes a three-arched entrance with polished Forest of Dean stone columns and carved capitals. Above are a triple window and a clock set within the gable. The church was repaired and renovated in the early 1990s, reopening in June 1991.
