About Wraysbury Baptist Chapel
Wraysbury Baptist Chapel stands in Wraysbury, Berkshire. The congregation closed in 2019, after having belonged to Wraysbury and Horton Churches Together alongside the Anglican churches in both villages. Wraysbury Parish Council subsequently bought the building, which now serves as a community hub.
The Baptist presence began through William Thomas Buckland, a Wraysbury native who returned to the village in 1826. He rented a house for services, where visiting ministers preached on alternating Sundays from May 1827, and started a Sunday school the following March. Growing attendance led to the construction of a chapel, inaugurated in September 1830. This was later demolished to make way for the present building, completed in 1862 with an adjoining schoolroom. The project cost £800, funded through donations within twelve months. In 1868, the congregation became independent of Staines and appointed Buckland as its first pastor.
