About St George's Chapel

St George’s Chapel occupies part of Windsor Castle’s Lower Ward in Windsor, Berkshire. This Grade I listed Church of England chapel remains a royal peculiar, placing it under the monarch’s authority, and is associated with the Order of the Garter. Its clergy are led by Windsor’s dean and canons. The building has accommodated royal services, marriages and interments, and several monarchs are buried there.

Edward III created the Windsor religious college in 1348 around an earlier sanctuary commissioned by Henry III. A major rebuilding programme began under Edward IV in 1475 and continued through the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII, ending in 1528. This work produced the chapel’s spacious late medieval Perpendicular Gothic form. Parliamentary troops damaged and looted it during the Civil War. Later campaigns included repairs supported by George III from 1780 to 1790, Victorian alterations, and extensive conservation beginning in 1920. Seventy-six twentieth-century heraldic animal figures decorate its roofline and flanking pinnacles.
