About St Matthew's

St Matthew’s is an Anglican church serving the parish of Southcote, on the south-west side of Reading in Berkshire. It is dedicated to the apostle Matthew and falls within both Reading Deanery and the Diocese of Oxford.

The parish was formed as Southcote grew following post-war council housing construction. A modest hall provided its first place of worship in 1954, before Sir Basil Spence was commissioned to design a permanent church. His revised, lower-cost scheme received approval in 1965, and the building opened in 1967. The modernist structure has a square brick nave, an offset chancel and a lightweight aluminium framework that leaves the interior free of supporting columns. Two diamond-form windows by John Piper were added in 1968, made from coloured resin on fibreglass. Structural failure led to the original shallow aluminium roof being replaced with tiles and a steeper profile in the 1990s. Spence’s concrete cross survives outside, although the decorative pool around it has been filled in.
