About Reading Minster
Reading Minster stands on St Mary’s Butts in Reading, Berkshire. Dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, it is the town’s earliest religious foundation and is now an active Church of England parish church. The building is listed at Grade I and resumed a prominent local role after Reading Abbey was demolished.
The church’s main fabric is from the late 11th century, although tradition associates the site with a seventh-century chapel. A royal convent founded there in 979 was later destroyed, leaving a rounded Saxon doorway. Major repairs between 1551 and 1555 incorporated stone and timber taken from the remains of Reading Abbey, possibly including the columns beside the south aisle. Notable features include an octagonal font of 1616, a black and gold memorial to William and Anne Kendricke, and bells cast during the 17th and 18th centuries. The organ was made by Father Willis for the International Exhibition of 1862.
