About Kings Road Baptist Church, Reading
Kings Road Baptist Church was a Baptist congregation in Reading, Berkshire. It continued under that name until 1979, when the congregation relocated to Abbey Square and became Abbey Baptist Church. The former site on Kings Road is now occupied by Reading Central Library, while the successor church is based nearby in Abbey Square.
The congregation dates its foundation to 1640, and Baptists were established in Reading by 1652, when local representatives formed an association with believers in Henley and Abingdon. Its predecessors worshipped in Hosier Street before moving to Kings Road in 1834. In 1881, the church founded Wycliffe Baptist Church farther along Kings Road. After the 1979 move, Abbey Baptist Church developed an international and intercultural congregation and shared its premises with Tamil-speaking, Ghanaian, and Portuguese-speaking churches. It has also supported refugees accommodated in Reading.
