About Church of the Holy Trinity
The Church of the Holy Trinity serves an active Anglican parish in Reading, Berkshire. Standing beside Oxford Road, roughly half a kilometre from central Reading, it belongs to the Church of England and has Grade II protection. Its worship is traditionalist Anglo-Catholic, and the parish comes under the Bishop of Oswestry for alternative episcopal care.
Edward Garbett, an architect based locally, designed the building, which opened as a privately owned chapel in 1826. Extensive changes followed in 1845, giving it a steep roof and the frontage seen today. After becoming an auxiliary chapel within St Mary the Virgin’s parish in 1864, it gained independent parish status six years later. Its principal historic feature is Augustus Pugin’s screen before the chancel, transferred from Birmingham’s St Chad’s Cathedral and instrumental in securing the listed designation. Further fittings gathered from elsewhere include a gilded altar by Martin Travers, an Oxford pulpit and a gold-coloured lectern by Thomas Graham Jackson. The organ combines material from several instruments and was restored from 1979 onwards.
