About High Kirk Dunoon
High Kirk Dunoon is a Church of Scotland building on Kirk Street, to the south of central Dunoon in Argyll and Bute. Sometimes called the Old Parish Church, it is protected as a Category B listed building. Following plans for its closure, the church held its final service on 1 October 2023.
Completed in 1816, the Gothic Revival church was designed by Edinburgh architect James Gillespie Graham. It stands close to the location of a fifteenth-century parish church, later associated with the bishops of Argyll. After that earlier structure deteriorated, it was demolished and its masonry reused for the present building. David Hamilton enlarged the church in 1834, and the three-stage tower was made eight feet taller five years later. Each face carries a clock donated by William Campbell. Andrew Balfour extended and broadened the building in 1909, while Douglas Hamilton created the chancel window in 1939. The graveyard includes stones dating to the thirteenth century.
