Brechin Cathedral stands at 6 Church Street in Brechin, Angus. This former Roman Catholic cathedral later belonged to the Church of Scotland but ceased use as a consecrated place of worship in November 2021. The building holds Category A listing, while trustees now oversee its care and future development.
Originating in the thirteenth century, the church retains Pointed Gothic elements including its west front, ornate window, Gothic entrance, square tower, nave columns and clerestory. Alterations made in 1806 were removed during work finished in 1902. Beside the building is a round tower dating from about 1000, crowned by a fourteenth-century hexagonal spire and protected as a scheduled monument. Notable features inside include modern chancel glass, the carved Brechin hogback stone and St Mary’s Stone, an eleventh-century cross-slab depicting the Virgin and Child.
