About St Vigeans Parish Church
St Vigeans Parish Church is a Church of Scotland congregation in the old village of St Vigeans, at the edge of Arbroath in Angus. It serves the local parish and has Category A listed protection, recognising the national architectural and historic importance of the building.
A rebuilding programme took place in the twelfth century, though David de Bernham, then Bishop of St Andrews, did not dedicate the church until 1242. Further changes were introduced in the fifteenth century. After the Reformation reached Scotland in 1560, the structure escaped the extensive remodelling experienced by many other churches and remained substantially as it was. A significant programme of conservation and renewal followed in 1871, directed by Robert Rowand Anderson, a prominent Scottish architect of the Victorian period.
