About St Mary the Virgin Scottish Episcopal Church
St Mary the Virgin Scottish Episcopal Church is situated on Ponderlaw Street in Arbroath, Angus. It is a place of worship within the Scottish Episcopal Church and belongs to the Diocese of Brechin. The building received Category B protection in 1971.
The present church dates from 1852 to 1854 and was planned by Edinburgh architect John Henderson. Built from regularly coursed stone beneath slate roofing, it contains a spacious rectangular nave, a north aisle, the chancel and a chapel. At the nave’s north-west corner, a tower supports a pierced spire that forms a distinctive part of the town’s skyline. Robert Lorimer designed wooden fittings and a screen for the chancel in 1927. The organ came from Newcastle upon Tyne makers Blackett & Howden. Arbroath’s Episcopal community used several meeting places after leaving the parish church in 1694. A qualified congregation emerged around 1760, before the town’s two Episcopal congregations combined in 1806.
