St. Andrews Cathedral stands at 28 King Street, Aberdeen, and belongs to the Scottish Episcopal Church. It is the diocesan centre for the Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney. Regular services resumed in December 2021 after a temporary closure, and the congregation continues to worship there. The church has Category A protection.
Completed in 1817, the church was made a cathedral in 1914. Archibald Simpson conceived the building in Perpendicular Gothic form. Aberdeen granite was used for the sides and rear, while the street-facing front was constructed in sandstone. George Edmund Street introduced the chancel in 1880, followed by Robert Lorimer’s porch in 1911. During the 1930s, Ninian Comper extended the cathedral and created much of its surviving decoration. Notable elements include heraldic panels across the vaulted roof, an oak screen with carved detailing and a gold-coloured canopy over the altar. Joseph Kennedy formally opened a further addition in 1938, accompanied by his son, John F. Kennedy.
